๐๐ฝ Woot Woot ๐๐ฝ The laundry room is mostly done!๐ฌ
We’ve been inching along with this makeover since February of 2021, (it’s now October November 2022…where does the time go?). We still have a few things to finish but…
I’m too impatient to wait until we’re done done before showing off this space.
So behold: our mostly complete 40-square-foot laundry room.
This room started off as a cave between the back door and galley kitchen (another challenge). We removed the bifold door the first day we were in the house. ๐
We stacked the washer and dryer and widened the wall, stopping at the outlet so we didn’t have to relocate it. To see more details about the transformation between this photo and the next one, head on over to the first makeover post here.
We couldn’t find a secondhand cabinet that we both liked and was budget-friendly. J found this one on Amazon for $110.
A few months later….
The room then stayed like that for over 7 months before we made forward progress, but it be like that sometimes…
Anyway, we wanted a transition between the entry/kitchen and laundry area. Since we already had to fix the floor, Jason removed the 2×4 bottom plate and remaining section of tile to install a transition using mosaic tile.
Jason became tiler extraordinaire, especially since he was given tough conditions to work with. None of the walls in this house are square, and so the tile didn’t line up with the entry framing.
We picked a smaller mosaic tile, since it would hopefully help distract from the crookedness.
I know there’s an awful lot of white in the above photo. We’re messy finishers/painters and that grey tile absorbs everything. Cleaning the grout is on our to-do list. Is anyone else guilty of never completely finishing projects?
Screech reminding us to stop for (her) dinner…or maybe she has tile criticisms too.
Next was removing the shelves and painting.
This was on accident, and I don’t recommend doing it this way. We were delirious since we didn’t get around to painting until well after midnight.
We originally only had single lines of tape, since we intended to paint green inside the borders of the shapes it created. Something along the lines of the example below.
After laying out the tape, we realized it would be overwhelmingly green and dark for such a small room. Instead, we added a second, parallel line of tape and just painted inside those lines. The result was much more subtle and what we were hoping for in an accent wall. The color is Behr Royal Orchard in flat.
It’s nice having a dedicated area for cleaning supplies.
We still need to finish the base, but this was a huge win for us…and Screech.
We switched her automatic catbox out for one that I’ve used before, a tree catbox. I’m back to scooping, but I prefer that over having her waste sit in a tray for the 2-4 weeks the manufacturer claims each disposable tray is good for. It used to be a real fight to squeeze through that room with a litter tray, full of her finest, in hand. ๐ฉ Now I have plenty of room to bend and snap and keep that litterbox fresh.
By the way, I don’t recommend those Fresh Step crystals unless you want little pee pee rocks everywhere…Now that I have all this legroom to get down low and clean Screech’s box, I’ll be switching back to a clumping litter that hopefully tracks less. The litterbox saga continues…
If you look closely, you can see the runs that made it through the masking tape. I will get to fixing that…eventually. However, if you don’t want that to happen to you, you can paint over the tape with your base coat first (white in our case), then paint your accent color. This video is a great example to illustrate that.
I’m OBSESSED with this bladeless ceiling fan we purchased off Amazon. This is the 20-inch size, and it is perfect for this small space. For a room that often houses stinky socks, cat poop, and muddy boots all at once, having air circulation was a godsend. I might go crazy and get a couple for the kitchen as well. ๐ค
I love how open, light, and airy this space is now. It’s our primary entrance to the house, and it’s been nice to have extra wiggle room to take off shoes or switch the laundry.
